How did your mother-in-law reacted when she finds out you were pregnant?

Esther – We told them Easter morning, quite early. My mother-in-law was so excited and happy that she ran out the front door and announced at top volume to the neighbors, “I’M GOING TO BE A GRANDMOTHER!!!” Then she laughed so hard that she wet her pants and didn’t care. And then we all got hugs.

I was nearly fifty when I unexpectedly became pregnant. Previously, I had only once succeeded in getting pregnant, at age 37, and that had ended in disaster (The baby died. I almost died. I suffered some long term damage to my health.) My mother-in-law had spent a lot of time at my bedside in the hospital that first time and knew she was too old to do it again. She reacted to the news that I was pregnant again as if I had told her I had cancer.

Jane – My mother once told me that when she was pregnant for the first time, with me, she told her mother-in-law and expected her to be as deliriously happy as her own (no longer living) mother would have been. Instead, the reaction was “Was that necessary?” and a lecture about how my father, her son, was not yet finished setting up his business and not yet on a proper financial footing… My mother was heartbroken at the time. But my grandmother loved me alright.

The idea around it all is that – As a woman, do not attach too much importance to initial reactions.
