Few days to end of the year, Yaba psychiatric hospital records 100% admission increase
Looks like many Nigerians are going crazy already with the situation of the country.
The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Yaba has experienced a significant spike of 100% in the admission of psychiatric patients in 2023, according to the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye.
This revelation was made during the hospital’s Annual Score Card presentation event titled “A Day With the Medical Director,” held in Lagos on Wednesday.
Dr. Owoeye disclosed that there was a seven percent increase in new cases and a three percent rise in the number of follow-up patients, both male and female. The surge in admission cases is linked to the growing prevalence of mental health conditions in the country, attributed to current economic challenges and other socio-economic factors.
“In 2023, the total number of all patient attendances increased by three percent. There was a seven percent increase in new cases attended, compared to no increase in 2022. We also have a 100 percent increase in admission cases, with drug abuse cases witnessing a 10 percent increase, and discharge cases seeing a reduction of 10 percent,” Dr. Owoeye explained.
